==Partisan background==
The presidential election of 1984 was a very partisan election for North Dakota, with over 98% of the electorate voting for either the Democratic or Republican parties, though several parties appeared on the ballot. Nearly every county in North Dakota voted in majority for the Republican candidate, including the highly populated Cass County, which contains the city of Fargo. Reagan did the best in McIntosh County, while Mondale did the best in nearby Sioux County.
North Dakota weighed in for this election as 6% more Republican than the national average.
